Spain: International support for a general strike on September 29

Corrective measures taken by the government to replenish state coffers and stimulate the economy, adversely affecting the living standards of the working class. That is, it suffers from lower wages, higher taxes on consumption, the decline in pensions from the restrictions in the payment of unemployment benefits from privatization, the creation of obstacles syndicalism (for example, simplifying the procedure of dismissal and the imposition of restrictions on collective bargaining).

From the outset of the crisis, most sectors sindikalistkogo movement [including CGT, CNT, SO, and so on.] Need to declare a strike against anti-people policies. But because they are tied only to certain sectors and regions, it alone can they could not afford to unless their demands are not joined SSAS [1] and UGT [2], which called for, though very uncertain, to the announcement dnyavseobschy strike on September 29.

It is very important that this general strike was a success and that more people were against government policy Zapatero - the strike not only at the workplace, but also went out into the streets on September 29.If the strike fails, it will not only defeat those public opinion perceives as the initiators of the movement - CCOO and UGT, but the defeat of the working class.

Rather than vigorously will strike, so the stronger will be the triumph of male and female employees, it shows how strong we are - blagodyarya our alliance, increased our awareness and level of organization.

We reproduce below the international declaration CGT [3], signed by various organizations libertarian direction.

Statement of international support for general strike

We, the undersigned organizations, wish to express our support for a general strike, to which 29 September 2010 in Spain calls on CGT.

A comprehensive crisis negatively affects the working class and especially in the poorest part.Although the Spanish government and is one of the most affected by the crisis, the same situation is observed in many countries.

We understand the reasons spodvigshie our comrades from the CGT to call a general strike, namely: the protection of social and economic rights and freedoms, syndicalist freedom and environmental requirements - from aggression on the part of multinational corporations and financial institutions.

Reform of the Labor Code, korretirovochny plan to reduce the deficit and reform the pension system, which the Government of Zapatero wants to impose on employees - are totally unacceptable. These measures are terribly unfair, because they shift the whole burden of the crisis on the working class, rather than on the true culprits of the crisis. It is unacceptable that the same institutions whose activities led to a crisis thrust upon us all proposals to deal with it - a proposal that actually reduce the rights of workers and increase the profits of the capitalist system as a whole.

We also support the slogan of CGT for a general strike: "For the distribution of labor and wealth." The distribution of labor means work less, but provide jobs for all who need it. This means a shorter working day (without reduction of wages), reducing the retirement age and the cessation of mass layoffs and their consequences - overtime, work on call, and so on.Under the distribution of wealth does not refer to the distribution of dividends or share of the population, and the investment of the money in health care, social security, providing benefits for all unemployed and in ensuring equitable distribution of resources.

This crisis vseobemlyaschy, so our organization will continue to work to further the widespread mobilization.
