Russian anti-war / anti-Putin activism in emigration: strategies, integration, obstacles and solutions Lecture by Lölja Nordic in Father Frost against Putin festival in Helsinki

4:25 PM - 6:00 PM
January 10, 2026
Oranssi, Kaasutehtaankatu 1, Helsinki

Who needs Russian grassroots activism abroad? What use is there from it and what is its meaning? “Your actions don’t influence anything” is a common
statement not only from the mouthpieces of Russian propaganda, but also, unfortunately, among Russian civil society.

Fortunately, there is an answer to this, based not only on theory, but also on successful practice, confirming that grassroots Russian anti-Putin activism abroad
is an inseparable and necessary part of the struggle against the regime. In this presentation and discussion, we will discuss the following topics and
aspects of Russian activism in forced emigration:

  • Establishing bridges of solidarity with European civil society and activist movements.
  • “Synchronization” with activists remaining in Russia.
  • Going beyond the emigrant / diasporic bubble.
  • Support of Ukrainian initiatives.
  • Struggle with pro- Russian propaganda.
  • Opposition to anti-gender initiatives and the ultraright allies of Putin in Europe and other countries.
  • Russian fossil fuel and Western eco- activism.
  • European left "anti-militarism" against Ukraine and peacewashing.

Speaker: Lölja Nordic, anarcho-ecofeminist, antifascist, anti-authoritarian activist, artist, co-founder of the Feminist Anti-War Resistance (FAR), coordinator of the FAR Vienna cell. Left Russia in March 2022 because of criminal persecution, since 2023 is based in Vienna, Austria.
